Sun City in Huntley

Did you know? A closer look at HCR

By William Geheren

How lucky is Huntley to have its own radio station? Thanks to the vision of Sun City residents Allen Pollack, Dorothy Litwin and Jim Carollo, we are all the recipients of a local source that keeps us all informed and connected.

Did you know that there are more than 40 shows on Huntley Community Radio? Did you know you can listen on 101.5 FM or on huntleyradio.com? Also, if you like a show, you can go to the website and listen to previous versions of each show. There are shows about sports, news, finances, food, healthcare, gardening, pets, books, traveling, veterans, flying and many more talk shows. There are music shows that include genres such as classical, swing, polka, rock, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and today’s music.

The most incredible part of the station is the opportunity for Huntley residents to get involved in an all volunteer run organization. There are elementary students and seniors and everyone inbetween. We have several college students that have moved on to radio stations throughout the country because of the opportunities they had at Huntley Community Radio.

The future of Huntley Community Radio is bright. We are always looking for new volunteers for positions on-air, as producers, behind the scenes or volunteering at one of our sponsored events. A focus of 2016 will be our presence in the community sponsoring or participating in events such as the Huntley Business Expo, St. Baldrick’s Day, The Huntley Memorial Day Parade, a new concert series that is coming to Huntley this summer, The Huntley High School Football games, Huntley Farmers Market, Huntley Fall Fest and many other events.

I have only lived in the great State of Illinois since 1998, but I have such a huge appreciation of Illinois radio legends such as Wally Phillips, Jack Brockhouse, Orson Wells, Harry Caray, Paul Harvey, Bill Kurtis, Larry Lujack, Dick Biondi and of course, our very own Orion Samuelson just to name a few. If you listen to 101.5 FM on a regular basis, maybe the next person on that list will be Sammy Geati, or Pal Joe Alengo, or maybe Herb Kelly or Gary Krewer. Maybe the next great radio legends will be The Dining Duo – Jim and Nancy Eggers, The Duchess, or Curtis Koch. The point is this entertainment outlet is in your backyard. Experience the airwaves in Huntley.
