Check These Out: February 11, 2016

By Dorathy Bobzin

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

The Mediterranean Slow Cooker

Winter weather and a slow cooker seem likely mates. Although I love their convenience, plus the lovely smell of something cooking by itself, I’ve not had delicious luck with crockpot meat meals. Consequently, The Mediterranean Slow Cooker caught my eye since it has a big section on ‘soups’ and another on ‘vegetables,’ both of which could make me healthier and suit the weather we’ll have for the next several weeks. Lovely, large, color photographs almost waft an inviting bouquet off the pages.

Solar
Ian McEwan
Fic MCE

Ian McEwan is a best-selling author. He’s not for everyone, but I’ve read 4 of his novels and enjoyed each. Solar is not new (2010), but I’ve not read it, so no matter what it’s about, I’ll give it a try solely on the strength of his name. The book jacket tells me the main character is a physicist, which is my nephew’s major in college. Maybe I’ll learn something that I can mention in an email to him. From an online review: Solar is an engrossing and satirical novel that focuses on climate change.

Guilt By Association
Marcia Clark
Fic CLA

Yesterday I shelved a book by Marcia Clark and found a couple more on the shelf by her. Thinking that name sounded familiar, I glanced at the short author bio on the back flap. Yes! She was the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial many years ago, so her name’s been in the news this week because of the new TV mini-series. I pulled off her debut novel (2011), Guilt By Association, to see if another successful lawyer can transfer those skills to the literary world.

Are you tired of the cold? Grey skies making you moody? Do you find yourself sighing often at the ad nauseam election coverage? I’ve got a suggestion. Calvin And Hobbes. Surely you remember the delightful Bill Watterson cartoon strip from the 90s. Bill retired in 1995, but the Huntley Library has over a dozen collections of the boy and his tiger adventures. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll smile as you read these colorful, humorous looks at the world through the eyes of an imaginative little kid. These books are in the adult non-fiction room.
