Check These Out: March 24, 2016

By Dorathy Bobzin

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials Iā€™d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. Iā€™ll share some with you that pique my interest.

Blockade Billy
Stephen King

Although in the sports world, March is for NCAA basketball and hockey playoffs, other spring sport thoughts turn to baseball. I was shelving a big, fat Stephen King book the other day and remembered a short novella of his that I read some time back about a big league catcher. Do you like baseball? This might be the time of year to read Blockade Billy, the ā€œfirst and only player to have his existence completely removed from the record booksā€.

Last week my friend Linda told me she heard (on an infomercial) that turmeric could help stave off Alzheimerā€™s disease and other maladies. Therefore, when I came across a book called Healing Spices, I needed to examine it. The sub-title is: How to use 50 everyday and exotic spices to boost health and beat disease. If it were only that easy, but maybe it is. The book is arranged alphabetically, so it was easy for me to flip to the pages on turmeric. Descriptions include a line drawing of the plant, a list of what the spice ā€œpairsā€ well with, how it contributes to good health, and a recipe using it. Youā€™ll also find 8 pages of colored, close-up photos of each spiceā€¦in case you were wondering about ajowan or galangal. After skimming some of the pages, I think I can empty the medicine cabinet and simply use more spices in my daily routine. The book mentions Type 2 Diabetes quite often, so if that is a concern for you, check out this book and talk with your nephrologist.

Noah’s Compass
Anne Tyler
FIC TYL

There was no room on the shelf for the Anne Tyler book I attempted to put back, so as I was studying how to re-arrange the books already packed in there, I took a second look at the one I was holding, Noahā€™s Compass. I like the name Noah and I like Anne Tyler. The back cover said the main character, Liam (another name I like), taught fifth grade, took early retirement, and then ended up in the hospital with a bandaged head and no memory of how he got there. Sounds good to me!

Whisper And Shout: Poems To Memorize

April is National Poetry Month so I wandered into that section and found Whisper And Shout: Poems To Memorize, a small volume with mostly short poems. Some are familiar, most actually rhyme, but all were selected for us to easily equip ourselves with a poem to ponder, share, or perform! Why not?
