Time sure flies, the Sun Day turns 6

By Chris La Pelusa

There’s the saying “Time flies when you’re having fun?” Well, in my opinion, time just flies. Somebody mentions 2005 to me, and I think, Oh yeah, last year. Somebody mentions the movie Jerry McGuire was released 20 years ago, and I say, “No it didn’t. Come on. Couldn’t be more than five years ago.” If somebody asks me how old I am, I say, “I don’t know. I’m not 30 but I’m not 40, so somewhere between there?”

Sun Day’s first edition, published April 7, 2010.

Sun Day’s first edition, published April 7, 2010.

The same is true for my perspective on the Sun Day. If you ask me how old it is, my first response is always three. At the turn of the year, though, I startlingly realized the Sun Day, with this edition, turns six. My they grow so fast!

In other words, the years stack up, which made me wonder what else with the Sun Day stacked up, so I decided to investigate the Sun Day’s historical reaches and see what trivia I could find.

Take a look:

Number of years it’s been in operation: 6 (but it’s on volume 7, scratch your head over that).

Number of editions: 165 (counting this one).

Number of special editions: 3.5 (.5 you ask? If you recall, right before this edition last year, there was a misprint where the same four pages ran in two editions, so we had to print the proper four pages and send them out as a “special” mini edition, hence .5).

Number of stories ran: approx. 1,000.

Number of pictures ran: approx. 500 (most of those taken by me, which sounds like a lot to shoot, but I’ll shoot 500 photos at one event and run only 1 or two—number of photos actually shot approx. 20,000).

Number of columns ran: approx. 2,000.

Number of words ran: approx. 1,200,000 (that’s only between stories and columns, total number of words ran is probably somewhere around 1.75 million).

Number of emails received: approx. 43,800 (this is only editorial-related emails).

Number of phone calls received: approx. 22,000 (again, editorial related).

Number of ads ran: approx. 6,000 (this number struck me as low, to be honest).

Total gross revenue over 6 years: Somewhere between $1 and 1 billion (I’ll let you guess which number the Sun Day’s revenue is closer to—here’s a hint: I drive a $17K car…and I had my last car for 12 years…and the Sun Day’s delivery van was produced before the turn of the century).

Total operating costs: I haven’t slept in six years, that’s how much!

But for all these numbers, the only number that really means anything to me is 1, you. Thank you for keeping the numbers rolling for six years. Here’s to one more and counting. Thank you for making time fly. The next thing I know someone will reference 2016, and I’ll think, Yeah, last year. And it will be 2030…and I’ll be living in Sun City!
