Check These Out: May 19, 2016

By Dorathy Bobzin

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials Iā€™d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. Iā€™ll share some with you that pique my interest.

DVD 323.448 TER

I was ambling by the non-fiction DVD section when this bright, easy to read title called to me. Oh yes, I am most guilty of not reading more than 2 paragraphs of the privacy policy or those small print terms I ā€œagreeā€ to with a quick click. This 80 minute, 2013 documentary explores what the back cover calls ā€œthe intent hidden within those unread and ignored agreements.ā€ I see Mark Zuckerbergā€™s name on the back; I wonder what he has to say about privacy.

DVD 973.931 SIX

Another DVD that made me take a second look had just a stark black/white/grey front cover, but the artwork was riveting. I donā€™t see myself getting to NYC in the near future to see Ground Zero for myself, so this 92 minute DVD about the rebuilding process could be the next best thing.

Suitable for Framing
Edna Buchanan
Mystery FIC BUC

This title in the mystery section of the library caught my eye because my brother has been talking about framing some family photos and memorabilia. But ah-ha! This is plot involves a different type of framing entirely. Set in Miami, a newspaper police beat reporter (from Chicago by the way) somehow turns into the prime suspect in a double murder that another newsroom reporter happened to witness. Accidently?

Baseball: Then to Wow!
Sports Illustrated Kids
JUV 796.357 BEC

What an eye-catching book that clearly demonstrates its purpose right on the cover! Even though itā€™s cataloged as a juvenile book, the content will be fascinating to baseball fans of any ageā€¦even the casual fan. Great drawings, excellent photos, blocked text, crazy colors and much white space make this notebook sized book perfect for browsing or study. Did you know that the average major league game ball has a life span of only seven pitches before itā€™s taken out of play? Many double page spreads show the ā€œthen and wowā€ factor of the title, such as how catcherā€™s gloves changed, and umpire uniforms, and even stadiums (fields). There is even a picture of Seattleā€™s Safeco Park with NO rain clouds showing!
