Our Ask An Angel correspondent is Arlene Petersen, Life Care Navigation Specialist in the area of senior home care.

Q. It is very difficult to keep track of my medication. Every now and then, my doctor changes my medications and I have trouble trying to keep it all in order. How can I manage all my prescriptions easily?

A. If you are managing many medications, it can be confusing as to what the purpose is of each one as well as when to take them. Keep a master list of the medication you currently take and make note of what it treats for you, specifically. Many medications can be used for different conditions, so having this noted is a good idea. I suggest using a spiral note book where you can easily track this information. Note the name of the doctor that has prescribed the medication. This will help you stay organized. Make sure you indicate the dosage and the instructions for how often to take it. It might be wise to ask your doctor or pharmacist what to do if you should miss a dose. If a new medication is prescribed, ask your doctor what the possible side effects might be. Pay attention and contact your doctor immediately if you exhibit any of the side effects. Write this on your list so that you can refer to it when you talk to your doctor. Your pharmacist can inform you of side effects so that you can have your ā€œradarā€ on when you take something new. Donā€™t forget list any over-the-counter medication, vitamins or supplements on your list. Your doctor must be aware of these, even though they are not prescribed. If you are tech savvy, research the use of a computer app to help you keep track of your medications. A simple, hand written chart will work just as well and it is easy to bring with you at any appointment. If managing your medication becomes stressful, a family member may be able to help you. Another option is to enlist the help of a nurse to manage your medication. A nurse can schedule visits with you to ensure your medications are dispensed properly. A nurse can also be an advocate with your doctor and a good resource when meds change. Always present your concerns or questions to your doctor so that you can manage your health responsibly!
