For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.
John Wayne: Life and Legend
by Scott Eyman
B Wayne
This is a book I went looking for because my brother and I stopped in Winterset, IA on our recent road trip to see the birthplace of THE DUKE. Winterset is bucolic & lovely, but in the proverbial middle of nowhere. How on earth, I wondered, did John Wayne (Marion Morrison) get from this tiny house in this tiny community to Los Angeles and the silver screen?
Still Life With Bread Crumbs
by Anna Quindlen
FIC QUI
Although I like this author and have shelved this book frequently, I’ve resisted checking this novel out because the title simply does nothing for me. It, in fact, repels me. However, this week I decided to ignore my misgivings and bring it home simply on the strength of my enjoyment of her other work. From the inside cover, I learn the main character is a photographer which helps explain the title…I think.
THE ODDS: A Love Story
by Stewart O’Nan
FIC ONA
I don’t usually read authors who have turned out multiple stories, but as I was putting O’Nan’s books in alphabetical order by title on the shelf, I paused to look at them all and found I’d already read two. This one looked interesting because the tag line on the inside cover states: Love is a gamble. Which leads to a casino, a roulette wheel, a big debt, and Niagara Falls. What could go wrong?
