For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.
True or False?
By Andrea Mills
JUV 031.02 MIL
This looks like a fun book for tweens, published by Dorling Kindersley, a well-known name in the school library reference world. Huge print, many pictures, and colorful sidebars will be attractive even to reluctant readers. Each double page spread is set up, as the title implies, as a True/False statement with explanation and answer. For example: You are taller in the a.m. than in the p.m. Or how about this one? Mice like cheese. Fun gift if Santa is looking for ideas.
Electoral Dysfunction
by Victoria Bassetti

I should know more about the Electoral College “system,” and this seems like a good time to learn. Therefore, I wandered over in that non-fiction section looking for something current, but not too complex. This 2012 book with only 179 pages, plus illustrations, looks fine. The forward is written by political humorist, Mo Rocca, who you might see on Sunday Morning TV.
Irish Coffee
by Ralph McInerny
Mystery FIC MCI
Since I was introduced to Baileys Irish cream over the Thanksgiving weekend, this mystery title caught my eye immediately. Adding to its Irish-ness, the setting is the University of Notre Dame. An athletic department coach ends up dead, then two women show up in mourning garb, both claiming to be his secret fiancée. H-m-m-m-m. Someone is lying. The author taught at ND for many years, so the descriptions will be accurate!
60 Hikes Within 60 Miles-Chicago
by Ted Villaire

Recently I’ve been wondering why Sun City (an ACTIVE adult retirement community) does not have a hiking club. McHenry County Conservation District itself owns or manages over 18K acres of open land with trees, prairies, wetlands, ponds, creeks, and rivers. This book could provide a starting point for some Spring/Summer outdoor adventures and/or the creation of a hiking club. I see one hike as close as Marengo! 20 of the 60 are 3 miles or less; of the 20, 15 are in the “easy” category. Come on. Let’s do it.
