Check These Out: January 12, 2017

By Dorathy Bobzin

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

Dinner Made Simple
by editors of RealSimple
641.555 DIN

I’m reusing last year’s resolution to cook a company meal once a month. This item from our prolific cookbook section ought to help. The cover says: 35 everyday ingredients for 350 easy recipes. I actually recognized all 35 ingredients and can pronounce all but 1…quinoa. Colored pictures accompany the delightfully short recipes. Nutritional info in an appendix.

Seven Thousand Ways to Listen
by Mark Nepo
204NEP

Never would I have looked twice at this book (despite a lovely blue cover), except for the fact that a sorority sister just gifted me the same one with a positive recommendation. Nepo has a NY TIMES bestseller to his credit already; his reputation includes descriptions like “consummate storyteller” and “eloquent spiritual teacher.” The inside flap reveals that Nepo has experienced hearing loss himself, so has something to say about endless ways we can listen. It’s not a list of 7000 suggestions. It appears to offer an interactive reading experience. At the end of each chapter Nepo presents a couple of meditation suggestions, journal prompts, and what he calls table questions to be asked over dinner or coffee.

Post Secret: confessions on life, death & God
by Frank Warren
700.453

I have read one of these collections before. The idea started in 2004, according to the author, as a creative prank. He invited anyone to artistically share his or her deepest secret on a postcard and mail it to him anonymously. A half-million post cards appeared in his mailbox. This, his fifth published collection, is the result of an Art Museum exhibit called, “All Faiths Beautiful.” The creative way people share their secret is almost as amazing as the actual revelation. Some, on the other hand, are disturbing. Do YOU have a secret?

The Logic of a Rose: Chicago Stories
by Billy Lomardo
FIC LOM

I love short stories. I grew up in Chicago. The title is intriguing. So how could I resist this small (146 pages) collection?
