Kong: Dull Island

By Tom Sansom

This time around, I found many of the films playing in the area were “heavily” R rated (language and/ or sexually explicit), which I usually avoid unless it’s a compelling story. None of the ones out there now meet that requirement, except possibly Oscar winner, Moonlight, which has been in the theatres for several months, and its’ too old for a review. The remaining list of non “R” rated films I have either already written about, or they were not greeted kindly by the folks who get paid big bucks to write about such things. The only option I saw left was: KONG: SKULL ISLAND.

I was inches away from walking out of this one about one fourth of the way in. Unfortunately the publisher’s deadline loomed and there was no time to find another movie. So, regretfully I hung in there.

This is the fourth King Kong movie. Most of you have likely seen the original with Fay Wray, which actually wasn’t a bad film. The most recent re-make in 2005 starred Jack Black and that was also a decent adventure story. This time around however, Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was stuck with a terrible script and a group of actors going through the motions. If, however, you like Samuel L. Jackson at his (Worst?/Best?) then this might be for you.

Kong: Skull Island

Entertainment Rating: 1/2 star

Rating: PG-13, one profanity that I recall, constant action and gruesome scenes as monster animals attack and devour (you know who)

Possible Oscar Nominations: Worst movie of the year (so far)

Needless to say, Kong is now twice as big as before and very angry most of the time. The only redeeming part of the movie was John C. Reilly, playing the character who had been stuck on the island for thirty some years.

Several years ago I wrote a column on my ten favorite movies, and asked readers for their list. I was swamped with responses and enjoyed reading them. The consensus was that Godfather 1 was the best of all time.

If I had a top ten list of the worst movies, Kong: Skull Island would be on there somewhere. I’m not going to cobble a list together, but if you have one or two where you wanted your money back, let me know. We’ll compare notes in a future column.
