Hemmer Road in Sun City is turning out to be a very dangerous place for drivers.
According to a Huntley Police report, the second significant auto crash occurred in the Hemmer area in the past eight months. On August 22, at about 2:20 a.m., a Chevy Silverado was traveling northbound on Hemmer when it left the roadway and struck the median and a tree near Delaney Road next to Neighborhood 23.
Police said the driver, a 50-year-old male from Marengo, was transported to Centegra Hospital in Huntley. Authorities added that the driver stated he did not remember what happened. He was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle. These charges do not require a court appearance.
Maintenance of and repairs to the median are the responsibility of the Village of Huntley.
On February 4 of this year, a vehicle being driven southbound on Hemmer, crossed Del Webb Boulevard, surged over a berm behind a house on Honeysuckle Drive, and crashed into the house, injuring the two occupants of the home. The incident eventually resulted in a woman’s death a few weeks later. The driver, Frank Helfer, 84, a resident of Sun City, has been charged with aggravated drunken driving leading to great bodily harm. He is awaiting trial in McHenry County criminal court.
The Helfer incident led to the installation of large boulders in the berm behind the Honeysuckle homes at Hemmer and Del Webb Boulevard.
