Ask the Woodchucks: February 22, 2018

By The Woodchucks

One of the Woodchucks had a problem with the light bulb in his garage door opener. He was able to diagnose the problem and repair it. Here is his solution.

For the past several years I have been having to re-tighten, or replace, the bulb in my garage door opener every few months. Using “rough service”/vibration resistant bulbs didn’t help.

When it burned out last week, I took a closer look at the socket and discovered the problem. Arcing, due to bulbs loose from vibration, had just about destroyed the contact points in the socket and on the bulb.

I was able to purchase a new bulb socket for the opener from ASAP Garage Doors for $11.00. It was very simple to install. UNPLUG THE POWER, then use a flat blade screw driver to pop out the old socket. Remove the black & white wires from the back of the old socket, they are attached with spade clips. Attach them to the new socket and snap it back into place. Plug the power back in.

The new socket seems to hold the bulb much firmer than the original so loose bulbs and arcing will hopefully cease to be a problem.

Question: Can you help me? I’m looking for someone who is familiar with this. I want to extend the natural gas pipe that comes out from my sunroom to my patio to fuel my outdoor grill. I am buying a ventless stove. I need the gas pipe to extend into my sunroom for this stove. Do you know someone who has done this?

Answer: From your description I don’t know if your house is on a slab or whether it has a basement. In either case, you will need to find a place to cut into the gas line and construct a branch to go to your ventless stove. I could not find a Woodchuck who had installed a ventless stove in a sunroom.

If you are looking for a plumber, I can’t help you with that either. I have never had a plumber in my house, and other Woodchucks I talked to had all done their own plumbing repairs.

Question: We have a Pulte built Arlington. What do we have to do electricity wise to install one of the camera/computer doorbells? Will it connect to the low voltage wires of the standard doorbell?

Answer: You will have to tell us the model number of the camera/computer doorbell you are referring to, so we can look up the instruction manual to see the power requirements.

If you have suggestions for future tips or have questions about maintenance around your home submit them to ask.the.woodchucks@gmail.com
