Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.
Two ladies (Diane and Carol) in our neighborhood came up with an ingenious idea to bring the neighborhood closer together. Their idea was to form a supper club. Every few months, Neighborhood 35 would pick a new target and descend upon the restaurant. The inaugural event was held at Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin.
Yes, we reviewed this restaurant before, but that was for their excellent Sunday brunch, and this time we will be having dinner.

Our new supper club had 24 people in attendance that night. Port Edward was kind enough to seat us in our own separate room with individual checks on a Saturday night at 7:00. Kudos to them. Everyone seemed to be bright eyed and bushy tailed that evening, and it was discovered that most of us took a nap that day in preparation for our big night out. Getting old sucks!!!
The alcohol was flowing freely tonight, and Nancy felt festive and ordered a frozen Margarita along with our appetizer of Crab Cakes Royale ($15). This was (2) crab cakes with Alaskan king crab and lump blue crab served with mustard sauce. They were not stingy on the crab, and these hockey puck sized cakes held off our hunger since we were eating our dinner later than usual. We also noshed on some warm crusty bread and butter that Port Edward happily refilled for us.
We noticed on the menu they offered a cold water lobster tail and a warm water lobster tail. The warm water lobster tail happened to be one of the specials that night. Jim wanted the cold water lobster tail but found out that it was priced at $76, while the warm water lobster tail was a deal at $24.99 for an 8 ounce tail. I told Jim, “Don’t even think about ordering the cold water lobster tail, stick to the warm water one.” So the moron asked the waitress if she could take the cold water lobster tail and dunk it in warm water for the $24.99 price. The waitress did not seem to share his sense of humor, so he settled for the warm water lobster tail. All dinners came with a salad and your choice of dressing. He chose creamy garlic in effort to combat my inevitable salad dressing choice.
Nancy was going to have the Fried Shrimp ($27), but after hearing the deal of the evening, she decided to have the Warm Water Lobster Tail ($24.99) as well. She decided on French fries, extra crispy, of course, and naturally, creamy garlic dressing on her salad. The vegetable of the day was green beans with sun-dried tomatoes, and they were really tasty.
On to dessert…we saw Bananas Foster “To Share” ($10) and decided to go for it. This was fresh bananas sautéed in brown sugar, Meyers Rum, and Banana Liqueur, all served atop vanilla ice cream with homemade whipped cream and pecans. This was huge and ever so delectable. This is one of our favorite desserts and if you have never had it, try it, you’ll like it.
Our table ordered a variety of entrees ranging from fish, to chicken, to steak, and everyone raved about their meals. Our lobster tails were delish and a phenomenal deal for the price. Our superhuman waitress kept all four tables happy and content this evening.
The price for our inaugural supper club voyage was $95.66, and a good time was had by all.
Jim’s take: Warm water, schwarm water, my lobster tasted good to me and I saved 50 bucks. I got the bigger “share” of the Bananas Foster dessert too!
Nancy’s take: Shrimp or lobster, duh…A lot of women enjoyed (maybe a little too much) their Brandied Ice for dessert. It was heavy on the brandy, and overflowing with ice cream.
