Cubs and White Sox face off for 16th annual All-Star game

By Christine Such

Sun City Softball “Cubs” found themselves on the winning side of the annual Sun City all-star softball game, played at Eakin Field on July 14, against the “White Sox.”

Glenn Groebli, President of the Sun City Softball Charter Club, said, “This will be the 16th year for the All-Star game. Each 16″ [softball] evening team selects two players and each morning team selects one player.”

The rosters for the 2018 Sun City all-star game were filled with some of the talented players that the evening and morning teams have to offer.

Kay Osborn from the Travelers was the only female selected. She said, “I have been playing ball since I was 8, but it was fast-pitched. I have been playing here in Sun City for 11 years. This is the second time I have been selected to play in the all-star game. Our team tries to give everyone a chance to participate in the all-star game.”

The game began with the National Anthem. Spectators identified with their favorite players cheering them on.

Theresa Demma was one of those fans. She explained, “I came out to see my neighbor play!”

Linda Benigno and her daughter, Toni, came to the ballgame also. “We are supporting my husband, Vito, who is on the Hurricanes. It should be fun.”

It was in the third inning, with bases loaded, when Osborn took her place on home plate and faced the pitcher. Her hit advanced 2 players to put the Cubs on the scoreboard first. She rounded home plate herself, and the Cubs ended the inning when they have reached their 5 run limit.

Groebli announced the play-by-play, “Cubs are really hitting.”

In the fourth inning, the Sox scored 2 runs and got on the board, threatening the Cubs.

The Sox threatened in the last inning, but not enough to take over the lead. The Cubs won it in the end, never losing the lead, with the final score 8-6.

Fans enjoyed free hot dogs, corn on the cob, and water, as well as the game itself.
