Tuning in to a legacy

By Chris La Pelusa

This edition’s cover story is about Allen Pollack retiring from his position as Executive Director of Huntley Community Radio and Dave Eggers assuming the role. Although the story does an excellent job covering this transition and highlighting both players (Pollack and Eggers), I wanted to personally congratulate Allen Pollack for a job well done … to say the least.

I first met Allen in Prairie Lodge, outside Drendel Ballroom as I was preparing to attend a Current Events meeting as a speaker and guest. This was almost eight years ago right before the first edition of the Sun Day appeared in Sun City mailboxes. There was a lot of buzz going on at the time about Sun City’s new newspaper, and it attracted a lot of attention, including Allen’s, but that buzz shifted for me personally when, during our introduction, Allen told me he was trying to start a radio station.

At this point, Allen, and a few others, were in the very earliest stages of this endeavor, but it caught my attention because not only did I think a community radio station was a terrific idea, here I was meeting an individual embarking on a journey similar to mine at the same time…though his was monumentally harder and more significant. And cooler. Much cooler.

And that is what I’d like to credit Allen with and point out. Huntley Community Radio’s significance.

First, what Allen and his team (almost all volunteers) did was so amazingly difficult and wrought with opportunity for failure around every corner. That the radio station is embedded into the Huntley community and running strong six years in is a testament to Allen’s and his team’s dedication, ingenuity, and skill. And energy. And commitment.

Second, Huntley has been working very hard to build a sense of community and beautification over the last decade. During this time, Allen saw an opening to install a venue that could bring the community together even more with features, information, and news and entertainment. Doing so only further made the Huntley community more charming and unique and attractive.

As a Huntley resident, I like knowing that I live in a town that has its own radio station. Seriously, think it about it. It’s pretty cool.

So in my opinion, Allen did so much more than start a radio station. He established a legacy. Thank you, Allen. Thank you.
