This column is a milestone in that it is our 200thcolumn helping Sun City neighbors with repairs on their homes. Our first column was in August of 2010, and we have answered over 677 questions for residents and saved them potentially $95,000 for repairs and damage.
Question: I moved into Sun City about six months ago and would like to replace or repaint my faded address numbers. Is there anywhere that you know of that they can be purchased? If not, any hints as to what type of paint can be used for touching up the numbers?
Answer: If you have a steady hand, you can repaint the numbers yourself. Use the black acrylic paint that comes in two ounce bottles at hobby stores and a small paintbrush. If when you are done you find your hand was not as steady as you thought, you can purchase new numbers. They are available at the Drendel Corner Mobile station.
Check the lights while you are repairing the numbers. The lights are low voltage and they just plug in, but if you have fat fingers you may have some problem in the tight space, but that is what neighbors are for. You can get the lights at any of the local hardware stores.
Question: One reader discovered in a recent column that he should replace his ten-year-old rubber washing machine hoses with braided stainless-steel hoses. He could not get the old hose off even with pliers. He emailed us to see if we had any suggestions.
Answer: After studying the hose connection in my utility room, I suggested cutting diagonally across the brass connector on the hose with a hacksaw. If the hack saw handle is in the way, take the blade out and wrap it with tape to make a handle. Be careful not to cut into the threads on the faucet. Needle-nose pliers can then grasp the cut connector and peel it off.
Question: I am searching for the plastic shower door guides in a Del Webb home constructed in 1999. Who was the manufacturer of the bathroom shower? Can you help?
Answer: We have no idea what your shower door guides look like, so we are giving you a web site that has many door guides to choose from.
