Sun City grandson to appear on famous game show

Question for $400: He was a pilot, then a pastor. He moved to the U.S. from Korea. And most recently, his grandson will be competing on Jeopardy in November.

If you answered, “Who is Peter Cho?” then you would be correct.

“I am very, very excited, waiting to watch him,” said Peter.

On November 12, Peter’s grandson, Tim, will appear on Jeopardy on ABC. The high school senior from Champaign, Illinois scored this opportunity to take part in the 2018 Teen Tournament after completing several interviews, quizzes, and mock game show hurdles. At the final rounds in Kansas City, he was one of 15 finalists selected to compete.

“I had been watching the show for a while. When the opportunity came, I decided to go for it,” said Tim, who competes in Quiz Bowl at the collegiate level for the University of Illinois, even though he is still in high school.

Tim’s strategy for Jeopardy prep was similar to what he does to compete in Quiz Bowl.

“Basically, if I’m studying history, I want to focus on parts of the world, by region. And then I look up database questions and see what keeps coming up about that country’s history. Then I read the Wikipedia page about that,” he said.

So how does it feel to compete on TV?

“They really emphasized keeping us calm throughout the whole process,” Tim said. “In the moment, I was just focused on playing the game.”

While the Chos are sworn to secrecy about the results of Tim’s competition, Tim was able to say the experience was well worth it.

“Honestly, it was super cool spending a week with people like me who are interested in these geeky pursuits,” he said.

Peter can attest to his grandson’s intellectual skill and work ethic.

“He’s a very outstanding, intelligent student,” said Peter.

Although Peter and his grandson live three hours away from each other, they get to visit about once a month.

Tim especially enjoys hearing about his grandfather’s life stories. Before emigrating to the U.S. from Korea in the 1980s, Peter was a decorated air force pilot. Upon moving to the states, he became a pastor in the Korean church and served for 15 years. He and his wife, Sue, have lived in Sun City since 2005.

“His history is fascinating, and he is so content with his life,” said Tim. “There is so much to learn from him.”

Tune in to ABC7 on Monday, November 12, to see Tim take his trivia game to the next level.
