Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.
Jim officially retired on October 1, and boy is he enjoying his free time. He has spent most of his days touring doctors’ offices staffed by the medical team of Moe, Larry, and Curly, with Shemp being on call. He also visited the hospital, the emergency room, and physical therapists trying to get his new knee and hip play nice together. These truly are the “Golden Years.” We wanted to celebrate the doctors’ decision to let him graduate from a walker to a cane, so we decided to try Good Tequila’s Mexican Grill in Elk Grove Village. Is there such a thing as bad tequila???
When you walk into this large storefront restaurant, you are blown away by the dećor. The chair backs are all carved out and brightly painted with Mexican themed scenes. They spared no expense with the beautifully decorated tabletops, and the same is true for the booths. Every aspect of this restaurant reminds you of a colorful Mexican cantina, from the beautifully tiled floors, to the adobe host stand.

While we were ogling our surroundings, we were interrupted by our waiter who brought over some chips and salsa. The salsa was tasty and only a four on the “sweathead meter.”
Nancy was in a cantankerous mood, and the restaurant has a very large menu. If you are a waiter, this is a very bad combination. She drove him crazy asking about every little ingredient in three different entrees, and could not make up her mind. After the waiter made numerous attempts to take her order, she finally decided on the Chile Relleno and Beef Taco ($7.25) from their lunch specials. Her Chile Relleno came with a choice of fillings, and she chose cheese. This entree came with a guacamole salad and beans, which she switched out for rice. She said this was tasty but next time she would go for either the chicken or beef filling for her chile relleno. The taco went home for my lunch.
Jim, of course, found the granddaddy of all burritos. He went with the Burrito Loco ($7.25), which was a ten-inch burrito filled with beans, rice, beef, and chicken, all topped with ranchero salsa served with sour cream and a portion of beef tips on the side. This monster won in the “deal of the day” category. It was absolutely delicious and enough for two meals.
Our lunches came with a cup of Mexican Chicken Soup. It was a different kind of soup with lots of shredded chicken and very tasty. Nancy and I both ordered our own side of Grilled Onions and Jalapenos for $2.85. We really should have ordered just one side since it was enough for the both of us. This added a little extra heat to our entrees.
The waiter brought us our check and we owed $25.96. After we paid our bill, Nancy decided we weren’t going to let our waiter off that easy and ordered dessert. We chose the Churros ($4.65), which our waiter said he made them especially for us. The way Nancy treated him, we’re still not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. These four churros were served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce topped with colorful sprinkles. The churros were tasty and colorful, just like the restaurant.
FYI: This restaurant is handicap accessible.
If you like colorful, lively ambiance, this is the place for you. It’s beautifully decorated, the food was awesome, and our waiter was very understanding. I apologized to him profusely for being a pain in the butt. He just laughed it off.
Jim’s take: The burrito was one of the biggest and best I’ve ever had. Watch out for the grilled jalapenos, they will come back to bite you.
Nancy’s take: I definitely think Jim won today. In fact, when we go back, I’m getting what he had. Mine was good, but his was better.
