With May being the wettest on record and temperatures on the rise, we are bracing for an intense start to mosquito season in Illinois. If weather conditions hold, multiple broods of floodwater mosquitoes are expected to hatch out by the end of June and nuisance levels will be high.
Here are some steps residents can take to help control mosquito breeding and exposure:
Tip & toss any standing water around their properties to prevent mosquito breeding. Larval source reduction is the single-most important thing residents can do to stay safe and comfortable outdoors.
The public should limit their exposure to mosquito bites to avoid health issues. Avoid being outside when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Wear long pants and long sleeves when possible and apply a CDC-recommended repellent whenever outdoors.
Residents should report standing water and nuisance levels so problematic breeding sites can be addressed. You can use Clarke’s new online Resident Hotline to report this and sign up for text or email notifications for scheduled adult mosquito control applications in your area. Access the portal at clarkeportal.com/hotline.
