What do we think when we hear the word HERO? Do we see or think of a person in the armed forces, a doctor, nurse, fire fighter, police person, and on and on? The answer would probably be: yes.
However, any person who acts in such a way as to safeguard another person is indeed acting as a HERO, especially if that act puts their own safety in peril, as was the case on July 20, 2019 at the Prairie Lodge swimming pool.
I had just finished up teaching an aerobic class and was seated by the side of the pool when I heard a cry out for HELP HELP HELP! As a certified life guard of over 50 years, I sprang to my feet and was making a dash to the pool, while observing a woman struggling to stay afloat, and noting that there were two women also rushing to the aid of the victim. Before I could, arrive on the scene, these two HEROS had the situation well in hand. The two women’s names are: Mrs. Cynthia Maloney and Mrs. Patricia Strzok.
Just think for a moment of what might have happened if these two wonderful ladies had not acted as they had. The victim was in a panic situation and could have easily aspirated water, or had a heart attack that could have ended her life if not for their HEROISM.
On behalf of a Del Webb Sun City resident, thank you ladies and to all others, remember you are all potential HEROES. Just stay alert and stay safe. A drowning person is in a panic state and could be in danger to their rescuer.
