Nick Koplos was asked to help pick tomatoes, at the age of 5, on his family’s Des Plaines vegetable farm. Now 83 years later, Nick (with a work ethic established early in life) yearly tends to his own double farm plot here in our community. Having learned correct farming techniques while growing up and with the help this year of a favorable climate for production, this past season has produced for our senior a bumper crop of huge tomatoes. Daily weeding and watering his “children” has led to 56 extremely tall plants (some of which were begun as seedlings while wintering in Florida). For the past two months plus, Nick has been hand delivering his crop to family, neighbors, and friends near and far. But my husband’s biggest joy has been to deliver three huge batches of these healthy veggies, weighing a total of 80 pounds, to the local Grafton Food Pantry! Way to go, Nickie!
