Do you know that socks are the most requested item by homeless shelters? And they are also the least donated item.
For most, clean socks are not given a second thought. But for the homeless, having a clean pair of socks provides warmth and comfort, protecting skin from infections.
Diane Naples, a Sun City resident, said, “Over the past 20 years I have been helping various charitable organizations, and at present, I am on a mission to help the vets. Our club Choose to Lose has been collecting various items for some of the local charities. I read that there was always a need for socks. Socks?”
For individuals who do not have a permanent home, the simple chore of washing or changing socks is simply not a possibility.
Naples said, “One member in the club Alice was celebrating her birthday. She felt there was nothing that she wanted or needed. Her family was adamant on what they should tell her guests when they asked ‘What would Alice like for her birthday?’”
And as you might have guessed, Alice Priser requested socks.
“Well, Alice told her guests to bring a pair of socks. She was in a state of shock when she received over 300 pairs of socks for our vets, children, and women. When she called she was so excited. She never expected this kindness and was overwhelmed at the generosity of their guests. This was one of the best birthdays she has had.”
Priser stated, “It warmed my heart. I was overwhelmed with the generosity of the guests. I thought I would get a few pairs, but never 300 pairs!”
Naples is hoping that Sun City residents will catch the fever and donate.
Naples said, “So this is what I am proposing. Veteran’s Day is November 11. I would like to have everyone who is participating drop off donations at the truck I will have at the lodge. I am going to ask neighborhoods to sponsor drives, clubs to help with just giving one small item at their meeting. Instead of a gift you may receive ask for something for the vets to make a better life for themselves. I can be reached at naples.d@yahoo.com and provide you with the items needed.”
