McHenry County property tax relief arrives

By Stew Cohen

SUN CITY – Property taxpayers in Del Webb Sun City-Huntley are more than ready for good news in the form of relief. Whether you live in Grafton Township in McHenry County or in the Kane County portion of Sun City Huntley, you’ll have extra time to pay the first installment of your property taxes. It’s not just Sun City Huntley but all of McHenry and Kane Counties receiving a grace period. The county boards have approved ordinances extending the date of the first installment without being charged late fees or interest. For McHenry County, an extra 90 day waiver is given to property owners who pay taxes directly to the county and not those paid through escrow, according to McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks. For Kane County, the grace period extends the normal first installment due date of June 1 to July 1, 2020, a 30 day extension period. McHenry County has its deadline as September 15.

In the actual process that led to a temporary waiving of interest payments in an extension of the first installment, the townships made their assessments, county officials reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the county boards voted to pass along the waivers to property owners struggling financially. For those with the financial means to pay, the county boards ask that you pay within the normal time frame.

My property value is down, and my taxes went up $1,100, for what???? What am I getting in return? NOTHING!! I get it go to the courthouse and watch the fat lazy overpaid sheriff with the hundred thousand dollar pension sitting doing nothing. I get a watch an egotistical judge pass judgment on people that he has no idea about for his $200,000 a year cake job. I have yet to see any layoffs or any sort of restructuring of pensions and or salaries. The government of McHenry County is out of line and needs to be removed.
