By Chris La Pelusa

When I was a kid, Thanksgiving was my third favorite holiday after Christmas and Easter (#1 and #2 respectively). It would have probably been my fourth favorite were my birthday to be considered a holiday, but since my name has never popped up on a calendar, I’ve had to make do with the standard holidays for my ranking system—though I do think there should be an appeals board for hearing holiday arguments. I mean, that’s the basis of holidays right? To gather with family and fight? It’s practically an American tradition. Why not extend it to contesting the validity of some holidays or lobbying for other important dates. Like birthdays?!

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, this isn’t a clever lead-in for an argument to make something a national holiday—though I’m pretty sure my wife would effectively argue why Amazon’s Prime Day is worthy. And if it meant the banks and postal system were closed, making it impossible for her to place an order, then I’d join her in that fight…but for very different reasons.

No, this isn’t about holidays at all but about giving thanks because it’s that time of year.

Opposed to my childhood interests, over the years, Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday. There isn’t anything I don’t like about it. I love the food, I love the weather, I love the atmosphere, the people, the friendship, the family. I even love the long drive through the countryside to my brother’s house. The giving. The giving of THANKS.

And while I’m going to reserve my familial gratitude for Thanksgiving Day, I do want to quickly share my professional or editorial thanks to the Sun City community and express my extreme gratitude for your constant readership and loyalty throughout the years. And for your seemingly undying patience this year, as we’ve navigated this bumpy road called 2020. Your commitment is more than humbling. I know I’ve said it before, but I’m going to continue to say it because, honestly, why not?! I am thankful to each of you for looking forward to and reading the Sun Day every time it arrives in your mailbox. You’ve made the Sun Day into the publication it has become. And I’d say it’s a pretty good one. And that’s thing about newspapers. Lots of times, they’re named “mirrors” because they reflect the community they serve; therefore, a newspaper is only going to be as good as the community it covers. The Sun Day is a good newspaper because Sun City is a good community with wonderful values and people. Thank you for imbuing that into this publication. Thank you! Thinking of this and looking ahead, it reminds me of that movie title: Happythankyoumoreplease. And that about sums up my thoughts on the Sun City community’s relationship with the Sun Day: Happythankyoumoreplease.
