Twenty years ago, first time Sun City residents paid a very low assessment of $99.00. The developer, DelWebb at the time, subsidized a huge portion of the cost of SC operations. Currently, residents, guided by a resident finance committee, the Board and management contribute to that cost.
Happily, unlike other developments, the 2021 SC assessment is only $129.00. That amount averages $1.50 per year for the past 20 years.
Sustaining those minimal increases, in spite of inflation, had to come from some serious financial planning. Wages, salaries and related employee expense are a major portion of the annual budget.
The 2013 budgeted amount for wages and salaries was about $3,500,000.
Last year, wages and salaries were budgeted at $3,000,000.
And, it is being reduced again for 2021 by $100,000. Covid cutbacks had something to do with the reduction but other efficiencies realized substantial savings.
Somehow …some way management is getting the work accomplished for less money, and so the SC assessment remains a low $129.00. A thank you is in order.

The common place for most people is to beside those in need. It appears now days as seen in the news and T.V., people assisting with food, clothes, shelter and medical care. Strangers helping
strangers assisting with common cause. Working in unison like a well-oiled machine. It’s such an inspiration it compels people to help another when in the pass never gave a thought to give their time to a stranger. To reach out to help a perfect stranger with looking for compensation for deeds well done. Seeing what is happening gives a feeling what if the shoe is on the other foot? Would I get help when I was not physically able to do for myself in time of need? There is a saying – you are your brother’s keeper and so you are.

In the 12/16 issue of hangyourhat, Therese Salvato Luce shares her grief over the loss of her husband. This is one of the most powerful pieces of writing I have read in a long time. It is very sad and moving, as well as hopeful. Thank you Therese for sharing your thoughts and feelings so beautifully, and I’m very sorry for your loss.
