I just want to make sure I let my opinion be known about the decision to no longer allow Prairie Lodge to be used as a polling place.
I know that the root problem is that to allow elections means that we also need to allow the presence of signs out in front of Prairie Lodge. I donât like those signs there, but they have been there for every election that I can remember. In my mind, to move our polling place outside of Sun City is an overreaction to the problem. The convenience of voting at the Lodge is a wonderful benefit. On election days where the turnout is heavy, people can wait indoors in line at the lodge in a very comfortable 70-degree environment. People that are in wheelchairs and walkers can be dropped off at the door under a canopy prior to entering the lodge. The Prairie Lodge is a terrific facility and absolutely perfect for us Kane County residents as a place to exercise our right to vote.
Iâm also troubled by the way in which this problem was resolved. This is an important issue that directly affects a majority of residents of Sun City Huntley. What was the rush? The issue came up and was resolved during âNew Businessâ at the board meeting. Couldnât the vote have been delayed for a month so that residents would have a chance to express their opinions? I have yet to find a Kane County Sun City resident that agrees with the decision that was made. Almost everyone Iâve spoken with was not even aware that a decision on this issue was imminent. My wife and I have gone over the email blasts and have not found a peep regarding the issue to move our polling place…until today (April 2, 2021).
An email blast came out today and I must say I was disappointed. I truly believe that the board does a tremendous job 95% of the time. I just donât get this one at all. Gathering input from the residents of Sun City/Kane County would have been so much better and would have provided a basis for a much better resolution.
I hope the decision to move our polling place out of Sun City will be reversed. The board has committed an unforced error, but I sincerely believe they had merely not recognized the impact of their decision.

Item #8 b on the March 24 Sun City Board meeting agenda stated: KANE COUNTY POLLING PLACE

MOTION that the Board directs Management to discontinue agreements with Kane County for use of the Prairie Lodge as a polling place.
APPROVED 4 yes 3 no
NOTE: Approved by Benigno;Howard; Wainscott; McGouey

So, it means what it says it means. After a long tradition, Sun City residents who live in the Kane County portion of Sun City will no longer have the convenience of voting in their respective âback yardâ after the April 6 election.
As of this writing, a representative at the Kane County Clerkâs office had no knowledge of, nor, had not been advised of the Sun City Board action.
Sun City residents living in McHenry County will continue voting at the Diecke Park.
