Bridging the gap between generations

By Michelle Moreno

The topic of generational labels can sometimes cause a stir amongst the different groups. As of recent, the most publicized clash has been between Generation Y or the Millennials and the newer, Generation Z. Much of the disagreement between these different generations resembles that of what was occurring between the Baby Boomers and Millennials, and similar with all other generations before that.

With Sun City having such a variety of age ranges being that it is a 55-year-old and older community, residents can fall into various generational groups who have all experienced their own challenges and successes. One thing that each generation shares for certain, is everyone was a teen or a young adult at one point in time, needing to prepare to face the ever-present challenges of the world.

Regardless of how times change among each generational group, some advice can hold true at any age, especially coming from those who have lived through the ever so confusing transition between the different stages of life.

With that said, the Sun Day asked a few Sun City residents what words of wisdom they would give to the younger generation.

Todd Kane made it a point to tell the younger generations the importance of maintaining good health.

“Beginning now — exercise regularly. Make a lifetime commitment to remaining fit. Your 70-year-old self [will] thank you. You simply can’t make up for past inactivity when you’re in your 50s, 60s, or 70s,” Kane said.

Bernadette Cychner expressed the need to be open to all sides of an argument.

“Open your eyes, ears, and mind. Listen to all arguments on any subject and make your own decisions. Stop following the crowd,” she said.

Audrey Jakoubek followed up on Cychner’s advice by making it a point to tell the younger generations about a lesson in friendships.

“People gravitate to others that open up and give insight into themselves. In return, you are apt to be rewarded with honesty and true friendship. This is a hard lesson. The worry about rejection is strong,” Jakoubek said.

As for what Sun City resident Kathy Carey had to share, her advice is straight forward.

“Study more and listen to your parent’s advice. They are wise and probably have had many of your same problems,” she stated.
