Pop tennis

Paddle tennis remarketed

While pickleball has risen in popularity over the past few years, now there’s something new: Pop tennis. Pop tennis is the rebranding of the 100-year-old paddle tennis that is being played across the USA and around the world. The game is played on a 60 x 21-foot court within the singles lines and with a regular tennis net. It is played with a paddle instead of a racket, and it uses a ball that is a 25% deflated tennis ball.

Nancy Fontana introduced and facilitated the game in Sun City.

Fontana said, “I think it is a sport anyone can play, and as we all get older, I think it is good to try something new! The more you play I think the more fun it is!”

Is pop tennis the same as pickleball?

Fontana said, “Pop Tennis players serve underhand, on the fly or the bounce, and get only one serve. But unlike pickleball, the rules and scoring are otherwise identical to regular tennis.”

On Sunday, June 6, any resident was able to try pop tennis. Paddles were provided at the event. Over 60 players tried the sport.

“Heavy on the fun, with great long rallies,” Frank Eisler said.

“I like it. There’s not quite as much running and moving as there would be in regular tennis, but the racket skills and things like that still can be hugely beneficial,” said Jim Sterling.

Frank Zilinsky said, “I would like to see the club organize leagues for the game. I would enjoy that.”

Judy Dill, a veteran tennis player said, “It’s fun, but I love regular tennis.”

The racket uses a memory foam composite with holes in it as opposed to a strung tennis racket, which does not have nearly as much spring. The slower ball speeds and tighter spaces mean fewer tight-angled shots, keeping the ball better contained in an area where players of all abilities can chase it down.

“It’s an equalizing sport when it comes to skill level A lot of the points when you’re playing last a whole lot longer because it just takes so much more to put the ball away,” Zilinsky said.
