Huntley Police Department ‘take to the sky’ in support of the Illinois Special Olympics

By Michelle Moreno

HUNTLEY – The Huntley Police department announced that on Friday, Aug. 20, from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m., officers will take to the rooftops at the Dunkin Donuts located at 12090 Princeton Drive and the Dunkin Donuts at 9800 Route 47.

The reason why residents will find police officers on the rooftops of these two establishments has to do with the Huntley Police Department’s support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois.

According to the Special Olympics Illinois website, “The Torch run has two goals—to raise money and to gain awareness for athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois.”

The “Dunkin Cop on Rooftop” is just one of many fundraiser events that have assisted law enforcement departments throughout the state, raise over $59 million for the Torch Run since 1986.

Some Huntley Police officers and community members will also be found on the ground of both Dunkin Donuts locations, where they will be collecting donations, selling 2021 Law Enforcement Torch Run merchandise, and spending time with Special Olympic athletes.

Additionally, the fifth annual donut eating contest will be held at noon at the Princeton Dunkin Donuts location.

According to Huntley Police Sargent Amy Williams, “Participants will include representatives from the police department, Village of Huntley, Huntley Fire Protection District, Huntley Park District, Consolidated School District 158, and Southeast Emergency Communications (SEECOM).”

The police department states that a member of the Huntley Park District has won the donut eating contest for the past four years.

Anyone that donates to Special Olympics during the event will receive a coupon for a free donut. The first 75 people to donate $10 or more will receive a Dunkin Donuts coffee mug.

Special Olympics Illinois supports over 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and almost 13,000 young athletes ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities from communities throughout the state, including Huntley.
