To steal from the Bard, “To travel or not to travel, that is the question?” Will 2022 be the time to travel again? Well, that depends. In some cases, YES, others NO, the rest – MAYBE.
With Covid still playing havoc with the world, and the new variant stirring the pot even more just knowing IF you can travel is a quagmire of major proportions. Earlier this year, the world was starting to reopen. Our son and his girlfriend traveled to Central America. They had to test negative three days prior to leaving and again before reentering the U.S.
My brother watched the news and managed to score a week’s vacation in Hawaii with his wife before they locked up the borders again. They were also lucky enough to catch another window to the north and went to a friend’s wedding in Canada before it shut down again.
Another brother just enjoyed a blessed event with the birth of his first great-grandchild. His granddaughter was visiting from Canada where she and her husband live. As she was nearing her due date, a checkup revealed the baby was already 10 months and growing quickly. It was decided she needed to deliver the child soon. A quick travel check with the State Department revealed she would not be able to re-enter Canada anytime soon. Next question, would her husband be able to get to the US to witness the birth. Fortunately, the answer was yes, he made it. Mother, child, and father are doing great.
The general complexities of travel outside the US have been further exacerbated due to the new-variant pandemic. Domestically, it depends on how you plan on traveling. Airlines are generally okay. Our daughter just returned from a business trip to Nashville and our son has been flying for work in Omaha. A group of women we know outside Detroit just spent a week in Sedona, so domestic travel is generally available. Restrictions still apply; masks are required for flights so be prepared.
Hopefully the coming spring will be the “end” of Covid as we have been experiencing it, and life, including travel, will return to normal.
