New art instructor Abby Adams has arrived in Sun City, bringing her innovative energy with her.
Adams said, “I’m excited to share my passion for FUN ART with residents of Sun City.”
Do you ever wonder if there’s anything you could do with an empty wine bottle? Adams does.
Adams’s February class at Sun City offered residents new wine bottles and some new painting ideas.
Adams said, “I have used more than the traditional canvas. I offer classes that feature their choice of material, wood, glass, canvas, a sled, and more.”
Adams also gives options for subject matter to paint from whimsical gnomes to lovebirds on a branch. If you don’t like those snowmen, she has numerous choices with her and helps you create a piece of art to hang on your walls or give as a gift.
Julie Klein chose to paint on a wine bottle with hearts sealing it with a cork, adding a bit of cheer during the dark winter months, especially with the string of lights attached to the cork.
Klein said, “I thought the class was fun and I look forward to the next one. Everyone did a great job.”
Adam’s classes are for all levels. She helps you create an exact copy of the project or encourages you to go rogue with your creativity.
Darlene Trolliet had never attended any painting classes before, until this one.
She said, “I’m a non-painter so I was very leery about trying one of Abby’s classes. I am so glad I did because it is a fun time. If you don’t know what you’re doing, like me, she will walk you through each step. It is worth going to one of her classes because with her help you end up with a painting that you are happy with. Fun experience!”
Joanne Hill has attended many classes now with Adams and said, “I have always wanted to paint but thought I had absolutely no talent for painting till I went to my first fun class with Abby Adams and I am hooked. I have taken her classes at other locations and loved painting a scene on a sled so much, that I painted three of them. I gave two of them as Christmas presents.”
Adams has events all over the area. Classes are held locally at familiar venues, Sew Hop’d, Copper Barrel, and in Sun City.
During the Covid shutdown, Adams made painting convenient by delivering art supplies to residents in isolation along with step-by-step instructions. The painting at home kit had everything needed to complete a masterpiece. The projects were a fun and creative activity during the pandemic shutdown.
How did she get started in art?
Adams said, “I have always loved drawing and painting. In high school, I fell in love with lettering. And after graduating from Michigan State, I had a side gig as a calligraphic artist and did wedding invitations. I loved doodling, lettering but was always interested in learning watercolor. I took a class in 2013 and the instructor was so encouraging!
Then I heard about acrylic paint parties…and I loved it and was hired the next day as a lead artist. I had never painted with acrylics but loved you could white out anything and start over. One of my favorite artists in class once said, ‘There are no mistakes in acrylic paintings just creative opportunities.’ This has become my favorite saying.”
Where are her favorite classes to teach?
“I partner with breweries, restaurants, park districts, adult living communities, senior centers, schools, nonprofits, home parties, and businesses for corporate events. I have upcoming events in March at Sew Hop’d, Copper Barrel, Obscurity Brewery, Crusin Bar and Eatery, and VFW in Wheaton.”
