On Sunday, April 3, if you were taking a walk in Neighborhood 21, you might have run across a lawn heavily-decorated for a birthday celebration. The balloons indicated a milestone that you don’t see very often: 109.
Betty “Lulu” Lucille Winkelman celebrated her 109th birthday on April 3, 2022, with friends, family, and neighbors.
How did she celebrate this special birthday?
Winkelman said, “My family went wild. My great-nieces put all these signs on the lawn. We went out to Jameson’s for dinner. There were balloons there also. Everyone joined the fun. There were seven ladies sitting at a table and they came over and sang Happy Birthday to me. It was fun.”
What is her secret to living a long, fulfilled life?
Winkelman said, “I get asked that question a lot. I had a good childhood. I was raised on a farm. We had milk, fruit, and vegetables from our land. All of our food was fresh or canned from our gardens. There were no preservatives. Also, I believe early to bed and early to rise.”
