Sweet and savory

By Jim & Nancy Eggers

Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.

Normal people celebrate holidays on their appointed day and for one day only. Not so in the Dining Duo’s household. Any holiday that is in tribute to Nancy, such as, Grandparent’s Day, her birthday, Mother-in-Law’s Day, Groundhog Day, April Fool’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and especially Mother’s Day, always turns into a weeklong gala celebration extravaganza. Mother’s Day this year started on Friday with every mother’s dream, namely, a trip to a casino and lunch at her favorite restaurant. Saturday was shopping for outdoor plants and various tchotchkes, followed by a good cigar, and a fireplace wienie roast. Sunday turned into a day of rest with a trip to Georgia’s Restaurant and Pancake House in Algonquin.

We walked in to a very stylish, and trendy restaurant. Jim and I liked the fact that they used shelving and green plants to break up the modern white décor. This establishment is a huge standalone venue which is handicap accessible.

Nancy was looking over the menu and because it was her “special” day she decided on a brunch combo, namely the French Toast Combo ($11). This was three eggs, two strips of bacon or sausage links, and two slices of French toast. To her delight, because, again, she’s “special,” she discovered she could substitute a specialty French toast for a $2.50 upcharge, which she did. She chose the Banana Nut Foster French Toast. This was banana bread, sliced bananas, pecans, and caramel sauce. The waiter brought Nancy two plates of food, one was the savory eggs and bacon, the other was the sweet banana bread French toast. Her eyes widened with delight when she saw the three slices of banana bread French toast topped with a whole sliced banana, lots of pecans, and caramel sauce to sweeten it up. Let the celebration begin. The smile on her face after the first bite said it all. The $2.50 upcharge to the specialty French toast was the deal of the day.

Jim spotted a bizarre combination, so of course he had to try it. I’m referring to the Potato Pancake Benedict ($12). This was bacon, tomatoes, cheddar, and chives on potato pancakes (3) with poached eggs (3). The eggs were covered in hollandaise sauce and his entrée was served with hash browns. The potato pancakes were like shredded hash browns formed into a patty that were crispy and delicious. These had a perfectly poached egg on top of each one. This is unusual because a normal eggs benedict serving is two eggs, not three. He said what made the dish even tastier was the crumbled bacon and tomato on the side. He’ll definitely order it again.

The price for Nancy’s Mother’s Day brunch was $35.56; Jim’s winning at the casino paying for our brunch, priceless…

Georgia’s is more than just your average bacon and eggs breakfast place. They have a huge menu with lots of creative combinations. The portion size more than justifies the cost. Bring a big appetite with you or expect to take home a doggie bag.

Jim’s take: Today I gambled and won with this different but delicious combination.

Nancy’s take: My “special” French toast was awesome, and having it on my “special” day made it even better.
