The running of the elves

The Running of the Elves, held on December 3, became a new event in Huntley this year.

Organized by the Huntley Rotary Club, this event benefited local groups: Grafton Food Pantry, Huntley High School Scholarships, International Scholarships, and Veterans Path To Hope.

Jim Uszler, president of Huntley Rotary, said “Over 100 people registered for the event. The majority signed up for the 5k run/walk. We had nine for the Kids’ dash. Our sponsors are Rookies All American Grill, DeFiore Funeral Home, Hampton Inn, Huntington Learning Center, American Community Bank, Drendel’s Corner Mobil, Digital Origin Solutions, Huntley Park District, and Kopf Running. As a new venture, we don’t know what our results will be financially. We hope it grows to be a very successful part of Very Merry Huntley every year.”

Members of The Talk Oaks Tennis Charter Club, who are used to running around the courts, decided to get some exercise and support the event. The tennis players, racquet in hand, met at the tennis courts to warm up and carpool over to Betsey Warrington Park Pavilion. An elf hat and elf-style t-shirt were provided to those who registered early.

Anna Alagna, Sun City Resident, said “What a wonderful morning. We sure do have a wonderful group of tennis friends knowing that our walking in the cold was going for a good cause warmed us.”

The day was sunny on Saturday, but the temperature was only 27 degrees, and with the wind, it felt like 14 degrees. The tennis club members separated for their choice of race. Some of the members chose to try the 5k, while many were happy to complete the 1-mile walk, chatting with friends and enjoying the brisk walk and weather.

Karen Semancik said, “The tennis elvins blazed the trail despite the wind and cold. What a fun & enjoyable group.”

Mare Roccasanto cheered on the group and said, “Congrats to all. We made it. It was a great morning with wonderful friends from our tennis group. Thank you to the rotary club and all the sponsors for this wonderful charitable event. There is something very special when you’re having fun and giving to charity all wrapped up in one.”

Would they do this again?

Nancy Fontana said, “I hope we can make this a tennis tradition!”

Each participant received a finisher’s certificate.

Jan Monroe was the first of tennis buddies to cross the finish line for the 1-mile walk. Judy Dill finished fourth in her category for the 5-k run.
