Paddling with the pigs

By Michael and Eileen Giltner

A friend and his family finally accomplished a lifelong dream – swimming with pigs. What? Not your cup of tea? Well, you have to understand the background.

In the Bahamas, there is an island devoted to some stray pigs. Pigs that have become very accustomed to having people around, especially when they bring food. No one knows for sure how the pigs got there, but theorize they were left by pirates or buccaneers for later retrieval and roasting. They never returned and the pigs flourished. Somewhere along the line, they became a treasured tourist attraction. The pigs are friendly, especially if you feed them, and will swim in the ocean with you. There are people assigned to the pigs to ensure they are safe and happy.

So, how do you swim with the pigs? Make a reservation to visit Pearl Island, part of the Bahamian chain. There is a regular resort play area, no overnight, snorkel, kayak, and most of all, enjoy time with the pigs. And, they come in all sizes from little porkers to large sows but they’re all gentle and kids of all ages will love them. Of course, there are other things to do in the Bahamas but how many of your friends have taken a vacation to see pigs? Most of my pig sightings have been in Iowa, but they didn’t swim.
