Q. My wife has some memory issues that are beginning to evolve. Her mother had Alzheimer’s disease and lived to her upper 90s. My wife is 86 years old and I’m approaching my 90th birthday. We’re managing life okay, although I do have my health concerns. While I love my wife, caring for her is starting to exhaust me. Some days she’s fine. On other days, her memory fails her, and she requires more hands-on care. I’d like to hire a caregiver to help me with her care. I’ve come across ads for independent caregivers and was wondering what the difference was between a private caregiver and a home care company. Are there any benefits to working with a home care company, or is it better to hire a private caregiver?
A. Family caregivers often neglect themselves to the detriment of their health and well-being. It’s never too late to ask for help and kudos to you for recognizing your limitations.
You mentioned independent caregivers versus working with a home care company. While you can certainly explore both options, hiring a caregiver through a home care company is often more beneficial for families needing a caregiver.
Home care companies are better equipped to provide their clients with continuity of care. They often have multiple caregivers on their team, meaning they can offer a substitute should your regular caregiver become ill last minute. Home care companies develop care plans for each client. These detailed care plans are communicated to all caregivers involved in the client’s care. Should your regular caregiver be absent, a substitute caregiver will arrive already knowing your wife’s care needs. Independent caregivers often work alone. When they’re sick, they can leave you in a bind.
Another benefit to choosing a home care company is that they thoroughly vet their caregivers. Before a caregiver is hired, they must complete an in-depth interview, which includes references, drug screening, and a criminal background check. Home care companies look for certain character traits and extend offers to candidates who are passionate about elder care. Although you can interview an independent caregiver on your own, you just never know whom you’re going to get. Home care companies provide training and orientation for new caregivers. They have a vested interest in ensuring that their caregivers receive ongoing training to stay current with best practices. Again, some independent caregivers are excellent caregivers, and some have even completed courses to become a caregiver. However, anyone can advertise themselves as an independent caregiver, even if they have no experience.
One final reason to consider a home care company is that many are bonded, licensed, and insured. This means that the company needs to meet certain requirements, regulated by the government, to provide hands-on care. They receive regular surveys by the state so that they remain in compliance with the state’s home care regulations. Being bonded and insured protects the client against any potential loss or liability lawsuits. It also protects the caregiver, as they are covered by general and professional liability insurance. Independent caregivers don’t necessarily need to meet certain licensure or carry insurance.
Although hiring an independent caregiver might seem easier or more affordable upfront, a home care company can offer more care and support to clients and their families.
