Q. I am writing to express my concern about access to healthcare as I approach retirement age. As an older adult male, I have seen many of my peers struggle to obtain the care they need, particularly those with limited financial means. I have always been a hard worker and have taken pride in providing for my family. Once I retire, I know my income will be limited. I’m concerned about how I will be able to afford healthcare, including preventative care, specialized treatments, and medications. I’m also concerned about changes to healthcare policies that may impact my access to care.

What can you tell me about the resources and programs available to ensure I can access necessary healthcare services after I retire? I would also appreciate any guidance on staying informed about changes to healthcare policies and working with healthcare providers to ensure that I am receiving the best care possible.

A. Thank you for your letter regarding your concerns about access to healthcare as you approach retirement age. You have raised some important issues, and I’m happy to provide you with information about the resources and programs available to help older adults like yourself access necessary healthcare services.

One program you may be interested in is Medicare, which is a federal health insurance program for people over the age of 65. It also serves younger people with certain disabilities or chronic conditions. Medicare covers a wide range of healthcare services, including preventative care, doctor visits, hospitalization, and prescription drugs.
Most people who are eligible for Medicare do not have to pay a premium for Part A, which covers hospitalization, but they do have to pay a premium for Part B, which covers doctor visits and other outpatient services. Depending on your income, you may qualify for additional financial assistance to help cover the cost of premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance.

Another program to learn more about is Medicaid, which is a joint federal-state program that provides healthcare coverage to people with limited incomes and resources. Medicaid eligibility requirements vary by state, but there are some general guidelines that apply to most states. To qualify for Medicaid, an individual or family generally must meet certain income and asset requirements. Medicaid covers many of the same services as Medicare but also includes long-term care and other services that may be important to you as you age.

To stay informed about changes to healthcare policies that may impact your access to care, we recommend visiting the official websites of Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These sites provide up-to-date information about policy changes, enrollment periods, and other important news.

In terms of working with your healthcare providers to ensure that you receive the best care possible, I suggest you have a conversation with your primary care physician and other medical professionals you see regularly about your concerns. Then, work with them to create a care plan that is tailored to your individual needs. It may also be helpful to bring a family member or friend to your appointments to help you remember important information and advocate for your needs.
