The Sun City Concert Band will be rocking the oldies, bringing back memories of music from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, at their concert ‘Rock the Ages’ on August 29, at 7 p.m. in Drendel Hall.
Richard Chay, Sun City Concert Band President said, “If you liked Rock the Ages last year, you’ll love it this year because we’ve added popular songs with vocals, like ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and ‘Proud Mary.’”
Pam Jorgensen, Sun City Concert Band Music Director, added, “We have discovered other talents in our band. Some of our band members who participated in Sun City Has Talent have great voices. I thought how can we incorporate this talent in our show?”
Four songs will feature vocalists Bob Taylor, Teri Pearl, Gary Krewer, Curt Gerald, and Richard Chay.
Jorgensen said, “We will have a wide variety of music. There should be something for everyone. We hope to get their lips moving and toes tapping. It’s going to be fun. We will have band members dressed up for the time period.”
Residents are invited to take a trip down memory lane and celebrate the music of the best decades. Come dressed in period attire: a poodle skirt, a tie-dye shirt, a bandana, or a leather jacket.
Esther Bell, a founding member of the Sun City Concert Band, said, “The Rock n Roll concert was a big hit last year. It’s the music we listened to. We will be playing a Beatles’ medley, songs by Elton John, Jimmy Buffett, and songs that everyone will know: Celebration, Staying Alive, Proud Mary. Teri Peal will have a solo piece, Candle in the Wind. Of course, what Rock n Roll concert would be complete without Wipe Out?”
“Our annual Rock the Ages concerts are my favorites. The music is great fun to play and the audience is very enthusiastic. They love hearing familiar Rock tunes. They sing along and sway to the music,” said Dave Macaulay, another founding member.
The performance offers wide diversity in the type of music including a salute to Dick Clark.
Beth Macaulay, also a founding member said, “For me, playing in the band has been the best part of living in Sun City. I treasure the friendships that I’ve made and the joy of making music together.”
Tickets will be on sale for $15, August 7, 10, 24 & 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Prairie Lodge Reading Room and every Wednesday in August outside the Birch Room Noon to 2 p.m.
