Q. Although I hesitate to call myself a senior, Iā€™m an older adult who is approaching retirement age and Iā€™m considering the prospect of active retirement living. As this is a significant life decision, Iā€™m writing for information about what active retirement entails and how to make the most of this phase in life. ā€ØOver the years, Iā€™ve witnessed friends and family transitioning into various forms of retirement living, and Iā€™ve seen a wide range of experiences. Some of them seem to have embraced their retirement with enthusiasm, while others seem to feel isolated and unfulfilled during their retirement years.

I want to be proactive in ensuring that my retirement is active and enjoyable. I want to stay healthy and independent, as well as mentally and socially engaged, and was wondering if an active retirement community might help me achieve this goal. Iā€™m interested in learning more about the concept of active retirement living. What does it entail? What are some other strategies for staying physically active and mentally stimulated as I approach retirement?

A. Thank you for reaching out and expressing your interest in active retirement living. I commend you for proactively planning for this new phase of life and congratulate you on your forthcoming retirement.

Active retirement living encompasses a wide range of tailored options to meet the needs and preferences of seniors like you. Retirement communities, independent living facilities, and senior co-housing are all potential choices. Each option offers different amenities, services, and levels of independence. Itā€™s essential to research and visit various places to find the best fit for your lifestyle and preferences.

Briefly, retirement communities often provide a vibrant and socially engaging environment with planned activities, clubs, and events that cater to various interests. Senior co-housing fosters a sense of community and shared responsibilities among residents. Independent living allows you to maintain autonomy while still having access to on-site amenities and services.

Independent living communities that are also often connected with assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing are referred to as continuous-care retirement communities (CCRC). CCRCs allow seniors to age ā€œin placeā€ by transitioning seniors to the appropriate level of care as their care needs evolve.

One other option to consider is remaining in the comfort of your home, knowing that you can utilize in-home care as your care needs change over time. This option allows seniors to stay active without moving to a new facility. In-home care helps keep seniors independent, safe, and engaged in the comfort of their own homes.

Regarding strategies for staying physically active and mentally engaged in retirement, consider exploring activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, or group fitness classes. Regular exercise is an important component of healthy aging, and it also has a positive effect on your mood and overall well-being.

To stay mentally stimulated, itā€™s essential that you continue to use your mind. Explore new hobbies, revisit favorite recreational pursuits, or learn a new skill. Consider volunteering as a way to feel purposeful and stay connected with your current social circles. Participating in clubs or classes can be a fantastic way to connect with others who share your passions.

Remember that retirement is an opportunity for personal growth, exploration, and pursuing your passions. Embrace the changes with an open mind, I wish you all the best as you embark on a new season of life.
