Sixth annual veterans softball game continues tradition

By Christine Such

Sun City resident Glenn Groebli started a tradition at the softball field: an event that included a softball game between Sun City veterans. On Saturday, September 16, the sixth “Honor the Veterans Game” took place.

The program for the day stated, “We honor all the brave veterans of Sun City who have served our country so that we may enjoy the freedom we have today.”

Groebli said, “Little did we realize that when we started this event it would become a significant annual event for Sun City.”

This year the event included the dedication of the newly named “Veterans Memorial Field.” The dedication was officiated by Sun City resident and veteran, Air Force Major General, Grant Mulder.

Ken Kalscheur, President of the Veterans Charter Club, said, “All veterans of Sun City were invited to participate and take part in this event. We have the Presentation of Colors by the American Legion Post 673 of Huntley. Not all veterans will be playing in the game, but all will be introduced.”

Kimberly Berhans led the singing for the National Anthem and God Bless America. Army veteran Greg Schuring played the bagpipes, and Rich Ankenbrandt played the powerful sound of a bugler playing taps. It was a call to remember those who gave their lives in the service of the United States. The grounds crew lettered the words “Thank you Vets” on the playing field.

The event included a presentation of valor quilts to Scott Phillips and Doug Jenks by members of the Valor Guild. Gazebo Quilters Guild in Huntley launched a quilts of valor program in 2011, following a meeting at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum. Since that time, the group of about 50 quilters has presented more than 2,200 patriotic quilts to deserving veterans.

Groebli said, “We have one World War II Navy veteran, Pete Karambelas. At 98 years young will do some pitching at this game.”

The day started with rain but cleared up to give the event a perfect day for the game and festivities. Anyone interested in joining the Veterans Club can contact Cliff Dungey at cliffld1@gmail.com. The Veterans Club will be hosting a Veterans Luncheon on November 4 honoring all Vietnam-era veterans.
