Ask an Angel: June 13, 2024

By John Barrett

Q. I’m facing a delicate family matter that’s been weighing heavily on my mind, and I’m writing to get some advice on what to do. I find myself in a situation where my siblings and I are at odds regarding our parents’ health and the level of care they need.
Over the past few months, I’ve noticed signs that indicate our parents may require more assistance at home. Simple tasks that they used to handle with see now seem to be increasingly more challenging for them. Despite my concerns, my siblings seem reluctant to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation.

It’s not easy for me to confront this issue with my parents alone, especially when my siblings don’t share my perspective. I understand they may be in denial or reluctant to accept that our parents need additional support. However, I firmly believe that ignoring the signs and avoiding the conversation will only prolong the inevitability of it being time for help and may even jeopardize their well-being.

I’ve tried to express my concerns to my siblings, but it often leads to disagreements and tension within the family. Yet, I can’t shake the feeling that we’re neglecting our duty to ensure our parents receive the care they need and deserve. How can I effectively communicate my concerns to my siblings without causing further division or conflict? How can we work together as a family to address our parents’ needs and provide them with the support they require?

A. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your heartfelt concerns about your parent’s health and well-being. Your willingness to seek guidance speaks volumes about your dedication as a family member.

Navigating disagreements with siblings regarding the care of aging parents can be incredibly challenging, but it’s essential to approach the situation with empathy, patience, and open communication.

One approach to consider is initiating a calm and respectful dialogue with your siblings, focusing on the shared goal of ensuring the best possible care for your parents. Express your observations and concerns in a non-confrontational manner, emphasizing the importance of addressing any issues proactively to maintain your parents’ quality of life.

Acknowledge your siblings’ perspectives and concerns and try to find common ground by highlighting the tangible signs that point to your parents needing additional support. Encourage open and honest communication, focusing on working together as a family to find solutions so that everyone has peace of mind.

It may also be helpful to bring in an unbiased, third-party mediator or counselor to facilitate discussions and provide guidance. A neutral perspective can help foster productive conversations and assist your family in reaching a consensus on the best course of action. You may even want to schedule a free home care assessment with a reputable home care company, who can offer their observations and give guidance on the next steps.

Ultimately, the key is to approach the situation with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to listen to each other’s perspectives. By fostering a sense of collaboration and unity within your family, you can work together to ensure that your parents receive the care and support they deserve during this stage of their lives.
