Local residents John (J) and Karen Semancik are beaming with pride over their granddaughter, Myla Wade, who clinched a remarkable second-place finish in the eighth-grade 400-meter run at the prestigious Illinois Elementary Sports Association (IESA). Her impressive time was 59.16 seconds.

Reflecting on her journey, Wade shared, “The whole event was enjoyable. It was a little overwhelming, especially the school bus ride to East Peoria. But it was a great feeling knowing my family and friends were supporting me.”

For the 23rd year, the East Side Centre in East Peoria hosted the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) Class 3A/4A State Final Track and Field Meet. Over 2,700 athletes participated in the two-day meet, May 17 and 18.

Wade said, “I didn’t even want to run the 400 at first, but my coach, Katy McCrystal, encouraged me.”

Grandfather J said, “I saw that when Myla ran in the relay, she picked up speed in the curves, and the coaches also noticed.”

Last year, Wade made her first appearance at the IESA, and her time was 1.00.91. Wade also ran the 4×100 Relay with her team taking fourth place with a time of 51.04.

Sharing her preparation strategy, Myla revealed, “I dedicated hours to training at the track, honing my skills with the relay team. As I stepped onto the track, I was filled with determination and confidence, knowing that I was ready for this challenge.”

Karen, the proud grandmother, said, “She also plays soccer, which involves a lot of running, keeping her in shape for both sports. She has received many medals for running track in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade.”

Myla’s eyes are set on the future as she eagerly anticipates joining the track team at Huntley High School. Her dream is to continue running track throughout high school and even into college, a testament to her passion and determination.

And yes, who could not think of the Olympics this year? Myla hopes to reach the ultimate competition.
