Kelly Bertrand, Prairie Lodge’s Fitness Coordinator, said, “Knowing the (Paris, France) Summer Olympics was coming up and knowing we have some competitive athletes here at Sun City, I thought it would be a great idea to celebrate that spirit of competition and doing your best with some events here at Sun City.”
She continued, “My intention was to provide an opportunity for residents to participate in a variety of events and to enjoy themselves.”
Kelly’s breakdown reveals the following sports and number of participants as the following:
- Table Tennis: 8 participants with 7 male and 1 female
- Mini Triathlon (100 Yard Swim/1 Mile Bike/ 1 Mile Walk or Run): 3 participants with 2 female and 1 male
- Swimming (25 Y Free/25 Y Back/25 Y Breast/25 Y Side/25 Y Butterfly/50 Y Free): 29 participants
- Triathlon: (500 Y Swim/5 Mile Bike/ 5 Mile Walk or Run): 2 participants with 1 male and 1 female
- Water Volleyball: 14 participants (2 teams)
- Tennis (with the level of play from 2.5 to 4.0 and up): 80 participants
- The Sun City Games were held the week of July 29 to August 2 (Monday-Friday) at the following locations:
- Table Tennis: MVL, Studio B
- Mini Triathlon: Prairie Lodge’s Indoor Pool and in the Prairie Lodge
- Swimming: Prairie Lodge’s Indoor Pool
- Triathlon: Prairie Lodge Indoor Pool and held in the outdoors
- Water Volleyball: At the Prairie Lodge Indoor Pool
- Tennis at the Tennis Courts
Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Finishers in each separate event.
Bertrand summarized the success of her Mini-Olympics with this statement: “In four years, I will certainly consider doing another Sun City Olympics. Meanwhile, we may try to do some yearly competitions in various sports.”
