Just the Facts
In June 2024, 16 Nobel Prize winning economists wrote a letter warning that if Donald Trump were to be reelected and successfully enact his economic agenda, âit will increase inflationâ. VP Candidate JD Vance responded that we should stop listening âto the expertsâ and start listening âto common sense wisdom, which is what President Trump governed on [in his first term]â.
Only time will tell which of these opinions is correct. In order to fairly judge the future, however, we should at least be able to agree on the verifiable facts that exist today.
These are verifiable prices that I personally documented in the Huntley area in late October/ early November:
Gas: $2.99, $2.98 (Costco and Woodmanâs)
Groceries: $4.73/lb for 80% ground chuck, $2.67/lb for chicken breast, $2.63 for 2 lbs of black beans, $2.52 for 2 lbs of rice, $1.42 for a loaf of bread, $2.69 for a gallon of milk, $3.54 for 12 eggs, $1.52/lb for apples, $.84/lb for potatoes, $.50/lb for bananas, $.76/lb for onions and $.97 each for bell peppers (Walmart). I might add that the store shelves were overflowing with fresh, good quality foods.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next four years. My money is on the experts, but thatâs just an opinion.
