Jean Christopher and her daughter, Antonia, were settling down for a quiet evening in their Sun City home on December 10 when they heard a loud crash in their back yard about 8 p.m.
“We were really startled and I looked out our back door to see a large space where our back fence used to be, and a car with its lights still on, leaning against the fence surrounding our deck,” Antonia said. “I grabbed a coat and ran out to see if the driver was okay, and then I called the police. I also took some pictures of the scene.”
The driver of the SUV was identified by Huntley Police as Robert Noga of Addison. He refused medical attention from paramedics who were called to the scene.
Huntley Police Chief Robert Porter said Noga was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions. The accident started on James Dhamer Drive and ended up in the back yard of the Christopher home at l3455 Meadowlark Lane in Neighborhood 35.
“Dhamer Road, in this area has a lot of curves, and snow was falling that night,” Antonia said. “We learned when the police came that the driver was eastbound on Dhamer. His car destroyed some trees along the roadway, knocked down about 75 feet of white fencing behind our yard, and hit our deck hard enough to damage part of the deck fence slightly.”
Antonia also said she has spoken with Sun City Community Association staff members who are responsible for repair of the white fence.
“When the police came, the officer said this wasn’t the only crash of this type in this area that evening,” Antonia said. “I later talked to Village Engineer Tim Farrell and asked him about the possibility of putting up guard rails along Dhamer Drive to prevent incidents like this. He said it would be very expensive.”
There is a posted 35 mph speed limit on Dhamer in this area, but Antonia said some drivers travel much faster than that.
Farrell told the Sun Day the village will investigate the feasibility and the cost of installing guard rails in the spring.
“We need to look at all of our options in this area. Dhamer Drive is a village street and all of the costs of guard rails or similar things would be ours,” he said.
