60 years together: A New York love story

The love story of Lewis and Carole begins at a train station in New York.

“We used to see each other casually because, for some reason, we used to take the same train home. I used to see her on the platform, and she used to see me on the platform,” said Lewis. “Every Friday, I would get flowers for my mom, and she would see me with the flowers. So we got to talking, and I made a date with her.”

From here, Lewis and Carole’s story took a strange turn down an unexpected track.

On their attempt at a second date, Carole’s mother told Lewis that Carole wasn’t feeling well enough to go out that day, and Lewis saw this as “a kiss goodbye.”

After their first date, the two didn’t see each other for two years, despite living only blocks apart.

Finally, one Easter weekend, Carole walked past Lewis’s house after church. She remembers him fixing his car in the driveway, and they started talking.

“We just said ‘wouldn’t it be a nice day to go somewhere’ and we did,” said Carole.

Six months later, they were married.

This year, they’re celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on November 10.

So what happened in between?

The Cohens moved from New York, to Texas, to Chicago, had three children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Lewis confirms, “From the very beginning, we had a close relationship. It was very serene and comfortable.”

The two feel the same way today. They enjoy traveling together and their weekly date night, going out to dinner and a seeing a movie. This weekly date has been a tradition since the beginning of their relationship.

Their anniversary celebration plans are humble and calm, just like their relationship. The couple plans to have a small party with family and close friends.

What advice do the Cohens have for a lasting relationship?

“Just be kind to each other, respect each other, love each other, and be a little flexible. Compromise a little,” said Carole (“A lot,” interjected Lewis).

And they both laughed.
