Handicapped transportation
We needed to seek out a handicapped means of transport recently to Centegra McHenry Hospital. Our handicapped van was out of service, and my husband in a motorized wheelchair urgently needed some tests done there. After calling several local and not so local agencies (maybe 20 in all), we found a cab service all the way from downtown Chicago who had an equipped minivan – very expensive of course. After much researching, we were finally told that the Centegra Health System has several vans in their Patient Express program. They can only be used for procedures and not doctor appointments. Before folks answer to this that there are lots of services, yes I know that, and we called them. Everyone had restrictions: not in the area, no motorized wheelchairs, required 48 hours notice, etc., etc. The sad thing is that this area seems to be in a black hole – very ironic considering that this is a 55+ community and I am pretty sure we are not the only folks needing help sometimes.
