This is a summary of the most significant and relevant items from the December 5 meeting of the Sun City Board of Directors.
The Activities Committee announced the communityâs 20th anniversary slogan contest winner, Ron Saballus. His was the best of about 200 entries submitted: â20 YEARS OF FULFILLING LIFESTYLE DREAMS.â Specific anniversary activities planned throughout this year will include a lifestyle learning lecture and re-enactment of the opening day ceremony of 1999, a golf cart parade, Association-wide drinks on the drives, and a season-ending open house. The Sun Day will publish details throughout the year, plus a major feature article, when more information becomes available.
The Fitness Committee revealed information about a recent resident survey regarding fitness-related activities. It showed that mornings are the preferred prime time for activities, and there is more desire for evening classes. The Committee said it plans to use more technology this year in its planning and presentation of activities, and improve use of space for all activities. The survey also revealed an overall positive level of satisfaction among residents regarding fitness activities.
In a related report, Executive Director Deanna Loughran said that fitness center attendance increased by 5% over 2017 last year, personal training and massage services increased by 15-20%, and fitness class participation remained at a similar level in 2018 compared to 2017.
Turning to maintenance and repair, the board unanimously approved a recommendation by the staff and the Facility Advisory Committee to purchase audio-visual component replacement equipment in Prairie Lodge from Savage Pro Audio at a cost not to exceed $27,076.
A proposal by Sunset Pools to replace pool heaters in Prairie Lodge at a not to exceed cost of $55,141 was approved.
The board also approved a recommendation by the Charter Club Presidents Council, and a request by the Historian Charter Club, to dissolve the club effective January 1, 2019.
The board also launched a project last month to review policies and procedures to ensure that consistent and complete information is used as the basis for reserve assessment calculations.
The board authorized the seeking of contractor bids for an outdoor seating area behind Prairie Lodge, with a possible fire pit. Funds in the capital expenditure budget are used for such projects.
Also approved was a staff recommendation to permit Billy Casper Golf, Jamesonâs Restaurant, and Centegra/Northwestern Medicine to participate in future New Resident Orientations.
After discussion of 2019 board goals, the tentative primary areas of concern for the new year are improved board involvement in the budget process, better use of advisory committees, improved response to âFrequently Asked Questionsâ by residents, and better use of technology to address needs of the Association. The final goals will be presented at the boardâs annual meeting on January 23.
On January 9, the board met briefly and elected its officers for the 2019 term. Results of that action will be reported in the Sun Day on January 24. The 2019 board is exactly the same as in 2018 â Dennis OâLeary, Bob Wainscott, Robert McGouey, Marilynn Berendt, Steve Bytnar, Russ Howard, and Vito Benigno.
