CAM meeting reveals new safety measures, pool improvements

By Dwight Esau

New “knox boxes” for home emergencies, revised Design Guidelines, indoor swimming pool improvements, and proposed solar power options dominated the proceedings at the Sun City Board of Directors meeting on March 27.

Jim Uszler, an officer of the community’s Neighborhood Watch program, said during a member comment period that the Huntley Fire Protection District now has a less expensive “knox box,” that allows firefighters to access a home in case of an emergency if no one is home or occupants can’t get to a phone. This new service is available only for residents that have a one-key access system to their front door, according to Joe Buschbacher, district fire inspector. Cost is $167.00. Cost for a two-key system (separate keys for a storm door and an inside door) is “about $100 more,” he added. For more information about this service, residents can contact the district at 847-669-5066, or visit huntleyfpd.org/residential.

Here are sound-bite-style reports on other board discussions at this meeting:

The board unanimously approved a contract with Downes Swimming Pool Co., the lowest bidder at $32,929, to replace the Prairie Lodge indoor pool and spa heat exchangers this spring.

Executive Director Deanna Loughran said the administration department staff, responding to U.S. Postal Service policies, has been able to reduce the overall cost of printing and mailing Lifestyle Magazines by about $1,270/month, or about $15,200 annually.

Numerous design guidelines changes are being discussed by the staff and the Modifications Committee. They will be discussed by the board at its April 24 meeting.

The Facility Advisory Committee is reviewing and evaluating possible future solar power options for Sun City’s major buildings, in conjunction with the board’s utilities consultant.

The board also is considering providing “assigned seating” for events in Drendel Ballroom. This will be brought forward for board action at a later date.

The investigation into the possible use of low-flying drones to inspect rooftops of major facilities in Sun City also is continuing.

The next board meeting will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Drendel Ballroom.
