Huntley area library voter turnout
A few weeks ago, eligible voters in the Huntley Area Library district were asked for their approval or disapproval for a $12.9 million bond issue. The available funds would double the library facility and add to its ability to increase services. In total, 4064, 22% of residents voted. 2710 voted YES and 1354 voted NO.
The library district includes all of the Village of Huntley and portions of Kane an McHenry counties which include portions of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills and Hampshire.
The YES or NO referendum provided an interesting analysis regarding voter turnout.
Since the vote tally was 4064 or 22% a basic algebra calculation provided 100% of whom could have voted. That number is 18,495.
That’s an unofficial count, but close enough. The difference of 78%, or 14,426, did not vote.
So how many YES voters actually approved the bond commitment?
It was 2710 who said YES to a $12.9 million commitment.
The district will continue to provide services to all 18,495 district residents and to the many patrons not old enough to vote.
Reported tax increases anticipate that a home assessed at $225,000 might add $55.00 to the tax bill. Higher assessments will result in proportionately higher taxes.

I chuckled when I read the intended use for the Outlet Mall remaining 60 acres to be developed: “these areas should be targeted for a mix of commercial development that serve as regional draw, such as general retailers, sporting goods stores, restaurants and service uses.” Employment numbers boomed by 263,000 jobs in April, retail declined by 12,000. Retail jobs are shifting to “back of the store” jobs like…warehousing which is just what the developer was proposing. 4 million jobs in retail are now under the employment category of “distributor warehousing” which is booming. Most new general retailing and sporting goods stores look like a warehouse. I don’t want warehouses there either, but I think the plan needs an update. Staying the course is a very good thing for those of us dealing with driving in the area.
